You just gave your client a beautiful color. Now what?

The biggest factor in how long that color lasts and how healthy the hair stays isn’t what happened in your chair — it’s what happens at home in the days and weeks that follow.

Here’s a straightforward post-color routine you can share with your clients (or follow yourself) to protect the investment and keep hair looking salon-fresh longer.

The First 48 Hours: Less Is More

The first two days after a color service are critical. The cuticle is still settling, and the color molecules are still oxidizing and locking in.

  • Wait at least 48 hours before the first shampoo. If hair feels oily, use a dry shampoo or just rinse with cool water.
  • Avoid heat styling during this window if possible. Let the hair air-dry or use a low-heat setting.
  • Skip swimming pools and salt water — both can strip color quickly.

Week 1–2: Repair Mode

The first two weeks are when you want to focus on repairing any stress the color service put on the hair, while also protecting the new color.

This is where the Fix Leave-In comes in. Apply 1–4 pumps to damp, towel-dried hair after every shampoo for the first 4 washes after coloring. Don’t rinse it out — just wait 4 minutes before applying other products, then style as usual.

The bioactive peptides in Fix work to repair the bonds that were disrupted during the color process, while antioxidants protect against ongoing free radical damage.

For shampoo and conditioner during this phase, use Quench for lightweight hydration or BioBond if the hair was lightened or heavily processed.

Ongoing Maintenance: Weeks 3+

After the initial repair phase, shift into a maintenance routine:

  • Shampoo 2–3 times per week maximum. Over-washing is one of the fastest ways to fade color.
  • Continue using Fix Leave-In every 4th shampoo to maintain repair benefits.
  • Apply PrimeShine as a finishing serum after styling for shine and moisture protection.
  • For blondes: rotate in Frost Shampoo once a week to neutralize any brassiness between appointments.
  • Minimize heat styling. When you do use heat, always apply a heat protectant first.

Quick Tips to Share with Clients

  • Use lukewarm or cool water when washing — hot water opens the cuticle and fades color faster.
  • Invest in a silk or satin pillowcase — it reduces friction and helps hair retain moisture overnight.
  • UV exposure fades color. If spending extended time outdoors, wear a hat or use a UV-protectant product.
  • The products you use at home matter just as much as the products used in the salon. Professional-grade products like Jack Winn Pro are formulated to work with (not against) color-treated hair.

Why This Routine Works

This isn’t a complicated 12-step routine. It’s built around three simple principles: repair what the service disrupted, hydrate without weighing hair down, and protect the color from the things that fade it (heat, sun, over-washing, harsh products).

When clients follow this routine, they see longer-lasting color, healthier hair between appointments, and fewer corrective services — which is a win for everyone.
